It’s time to celebrate the history of volleyball with wild and crazy colored volleyball socks!
Volleyball was invented by William G. Morgan in 1895, an athletic teacher at a YMCA in Massachusetts. In honor of William Morgan and the great state of Massachusetts, and the spirit of American ingenuity we have rich blue volleyball socks.
In 1900, just five short years after volleyball was thought up, it had already gained popularity in Canada, Asia and South America. This is quite amazing considering that there were no telephones or the Internet to help spread the word—just enthusiastic players and fans, the network of the YMCA and newspaper articles. What’s the perfect volleyball sock to celebrate this achievement? Black with hot pink stripes, of course—because volleyball was hot, hot, hot!
So, hot in fact that also in 1900, a special ball was made just to play volleyball. What a fantastic achievement—it’s own ball, different from a basketball, different from any other ball every made. We have to celebrate the invention of the volley ball with wearing turquoise knee hi volleyball socks.
In 1916 the National College Athletic Association (NCAA) teamed with the YMCA set down the rules and regulations for playing volleyball and the game was officially taught in schools and colleges! Yea! It was official: volleyball had made it to mainstream education. Let’s celebrate with a volleyball game wearing over the knee white with green striped volleyball socks.
Brooklyn, New York was the site of the very first YMCA Volleyball championships in 1922. A whooping 27 teams from 11 states came for this historic event. You can choose from more than 27 kinds of volleyball socks, and lots and lots of colors and color combinations.
Let’s fast forward to 1950 when it is estimated that over 50 million people all over the world in more than 60 countries were attacking the ball for a kill. Can’t you just envision 50 million people all wearing fun and funky volleyball socks?
Volleyball uniforms evolved with the sport. Volleyball joined the Olympic games in 1964. Players wore loose tee shirts with comfortable shorts, sneakers and—you guessed it—volleyball socks. So be a part of the tradition, connect with the supersonic history of this great sport and proudly wear your volleyball socks.
